Seismic characterization is a key processed in today's oil and gas industry to perform evaluation, geological modeling and reservoir characterization for Oil and Gas Company's exploration, appraisal and development drilling program. Such process has even become of the utmost importance, since the era of easy oil has come to an end.
In such context, IFP group has pioneered the development of inversion software and characterization methods since the mid 80's with the InterWell product.
InterWell propose a unique workflow designed to analyze and pre processed the seismic data, produce accurate seismic wavelet calibrated at wells, model the impedances in the whole volume through geological data including wells and structural and stratigraphic data and finally computes the optimal impedances by an inversion process which allows weighting the seismic and the geological data according to their respective quality.
Build upon the extensive IFPen Group experience for seismic inversion, InterWell 2012 offers a unified workflowin 4 main steps:
InterWell is considered a key process as the seismic inversion is commonly used for:
In the Bull Hanine field (offshore Qatar), considerable heterogeneities in hard well data have been observed and the inter well distribution of petrophysical properties will suffer in the absence of additional control. Reservoir properties information was extracted from optimally reprocessed 3D seismic data using Pre stack elastic inversion to produce lithology, lithology probability and porosity.
The results from petro elastic studies on well data show that acoustic and elastic impedances could be used to discriminate lithologies: Calcite, Dolomite and Anhydrite. A pre stack inversion has been thus conducted prior to a 3D discriminant analysis to produce dominant lithology and associated probability volumes.
During a following geo-statistical modeling, these volumes have been used as co simulation parameters for porosity distribution resulting in a high resolution static model of the reservoir.
A seismic amplitude inversion using inter-bed multiples management has been performed to improve the S/N ratio of the original seismic data in order to be used as input for a Fracture seismic facies analysis.
It has been demonstrated that the azimuth of lineation picked on the seismic facies maps is consistent with the azimuth of dominant faults and fractures picked on image logs. Some inconsistencies were successfully explained by the seismic ability to pick up the conjugate pair of the pattern revealed by the image logs. This consistency in interpretation made from data with scale of measurement at least one order of magnitude apart, adds weight to the argument that features observed at a small scale are repeatable at a larger scale. This consistency strengthens the interpretation of each set of Fractures/Faults.
The use of the inter-bed multiples management to produce reflectivity volumes with a significantly reduced noises removes ambiguities from the seismic facies map interpretation.
These factors combine to put us in a better position to use the facies map to develop the field.
